Five Years Later, Anon

Five years ago this morning I was sitting in our humble little Burnaby apartment having just watched the movers haul the last bits of our packed-up-junk into a big truck and (theoretically) off to Alberta. One of my last acts in the apartment — geek that I am — was to unhook the cable-modem and toss it into the car, leaving my last stamp on the blog a few moments before vacating the old suite, number three-one-four.

Far be it from me to get sentimental on this blog… so draw your own conclusions.

In other news…

My running clinic was delayed. One week. Which was just as well because I was out of town that day last week when it should have started and didn’t make it home in time to get to the clinic anyhow. My training officially began on Sunday… and by that I mean as of this past Sunday I’m going to try very hard to follow the guiding principals — actually, a little coloured chart I printed off the site — of my training routine. The weight of that conviction is the realization I’ll be running as much as five times per week.

We were at the Mad Hatter’s Gala Ball on Saturday night. I dressed as a nineteen-twenties gangster, hat and all, and Karin wore a stunning gown (she’d purchased somewhere local the previous week) that had people asking if it was vintage era wear. We were in fairly deep, seated at a table with a few interesting folks, including the Journal reporter who was covering the event and some other suave upper-crusters. I should post photos. Really.

We saw The Wizard of Oz on Friday night at the Citadel. I enjoyed it well enough but as I tried to explain to Karin, I’m just picky about my Baum-lore. The acting and production was great, but for those who have read — and are fans of — the original writings (and spin-offs) it may be in your repertoire of useless facts and knowledge that the movie version was (in some opinions) a heresy of the Baum-canon and something of a bastardizing of the original novel — or at least it’s general purpose. The movie did only one good thing for the story, and that was to popularize it enough so that people looked to read the original and others in the series. That’s all fine and well, but the play we saw on Friday — while (as I said) produced and acted well, and on it’s own just fine — was really just a theatre-adaptation of the movie, and (in fact) a couple steps further away from the novels even than the movie was. So, the short of that is, Baum fan that I am, I enjoyed it for what it was, but in the context of what I understand of the Oz-Metaverse, it irked me big time.

And one last note: for those who are still concerned for my goose-egg-headed daughter. All’s well, and she’s been back to her old tricks since nary a day later.
